In three days, our Youth Olympic Games (YOG) athlete head into action in Buenos Aires. With a total team of 13, five Queenslanders will don the green and gold for their biggest competition in their young careers.

Joshua Cowley, Lizzie Moss, Oscar Miers, Rochelle Vidler and Jamie Hiscock made their way into the team via the qualification meet, the Melanesian Championships, in Vanuatu in May and now find themselves on the big stage in Argentina.

Hammer Thrower Rochelle Vidler has twice been to the Oceania championships and Melanesian regional championships, but the Youth Olympic Games provides a different challenge.

“I’ve been to Oceania before so I’ve put the colours on, but this just feels, well it’s the Olympics, it’s a new atmosphere. It’s gonna be great; it’s a new city. A whole new experience than going to Oceania or any other big event”

Oscar Miers will compete in the High Jump in Argentina, and during the early team preparations, Brandon Starc was on hand to share some wisdom (Starc was second in the High Jump at the 2010 YOG) “Having Brandon here was quite helpful, after the meeting, spoke to him for a little bit and asked him a few tips and pointers that he suggested and everything so I got quite a lot”

The teams second high jump, Lizzie Moss, didn’t start her athletics career in the jumps “It started when I was younger with little athletics. I used to focus more on the middle distance/long distance but then I kinda transitioned into high jump and then I loved it and stuck with it ever since”

Competing in the 2km Steeplechase/XC in Buenos Aires, Jamie Hiscock feels ready to go “Trainings really good. I had national XC not long ago and have been building from there and had a time trial last week and that was pretty good so can’t wait really!”

Rounding out the team, Long Jumper Joshua Cowley’s athletics journey has been lengthy “I started ages ago, probably when I was about 9. Used to run around everywhere, started off with Little Athletics and first carnival, turned out I could run so I started off running and then pretty much the event chose me. I just started getting good at long jump, that’s the one I got more success with so yea that’s how I got into long jump, it found me.”

The team will also be looked after by three QLD coaches, Ben Norton will take care of the distance athletes, Stacey Taurima the Jumpers and Sharon Hannan the hurdles and sprints.
