Australia's 'next generation' of track and field talent will be on full display in Sydney as more than 2000 junior athletes descend to compete at the famous Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre.

Spanning 5 days of competition, the 2018 Australian Junior Athletics Championships will be held from Wednesday 14th to Sunday 18th March and includes the U14-U20 National Championships for both able-bodied and multi-class athletes.

#The Women's U20 3000m will be held separately to Australian Junior Championships at Sydney Olympic Park on Friday 2nd February (entry below). Entries close 8am (AEST), Friday 26th January. 

*Heptathlon/Decathlon events will be held at Victorian Athletics Championships on 2-4 March. Entries close 11am (AEST), Monday 19th February.

Selection Policy

To be eligible for selection athletes must be a current member of Queensland Athletics and a minimum of 12 years and a maximum of 19 years of age as at the 31 December 2018. Athletes are also required to compete in the Queensland Junior Athletics Championships (22 - 25 February 2018), and at least one other QA competition during the 2017-2018 QA Summer Series#

To qualify to compete in the Australian Athletics Championships athletes must satisfy at least one of the following criteria:

  • Place 1st, 2nd or 3rd in: 
    • Queensland Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships (12 -15 October 2017) *
    • Queensland Junior Athletics Championships (22 - 25 February 2018)

  • Place 1st or 2nd in:
    • Athletics North Queensland Track & Field Championships (22 - 24 September 2017) * ^

  • Any athlete that achieves the entry standard is eligible for selection (pending nomination)

# Athletes that live further than 200 km from the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre, or who have extenuating circumstances, may apply to the Queensland Athletics CEO for an exception. Athletes registered with ANQ are not required to compete in the Queensland Junior Athletics Championships.

* Due to the year change, athletes will compete up in the next age division – i.e. if athlete placed in the U15 (14 years) age group at the 2017 QSS/ANQ Championships, they will compete up in the U16 age group at the 2018 Australian Junior Championships.

If you believe you have qualified for the 2018 Australian Athletics Championships then we strongly encourage you to nominate for the Queensland Team.

There is no cost to nominate and it only takes a few minutes. Nominations close at 11:59pm on Sunday 25th February 2018.

Queensland Athletics will notify nominees of the success of their nomination on a weekly basis from January, 2018. A Team List will also be updated on this page on a weekly basis. If your name does not appear on the team list and your nomination has been approved please contact the QA Office. 

Final team nominations list will be finalised on Thursday 1st March following the close of nominations. 

Please note that athletes selected in the Queensland Team will not have their place in the team officially confirmed until the eligibility requirements have been met and team registration and payment has been completed by the due date.

Athletes whose nominations have been approved for the Queensland Team to compete at the 2018 Australian Athletics Championships in Sydney must register and pay the Team Levy of $150. All approved nominations will appear on the team list. Only those who appear on the team list may register.

Athletes are not confirmed members of the team until they have completed this registration form.

The Team Levy includes:

- Team Selection
- Team Administration Costs
- Team Management Services; Queensland Athletics will be providing an experienced management team of managers to assist with athlete management throughout the championships
- Access to team physiotherapists

Event entry for these championships is $30 per event (*$30 per event additional charge for late entries)



Accommodation packages are available. The  package is for a minimum of 2 nights and costs $390 ($195 per each additional night).

Athletes are not required to stay with the Team.  Packages are only available for athletes under 18 years of age as at 18 March 2018, who are traveling to Sydney unaccompanied. The accommodation package includes accommodation (twin share), breakfast and transport between Sydney Airport, Team hotel and SOPAC. Athletes who choose to stay with the team must make arrangements to find transport to Sydney Airport and must also inform Queensland Athletics of their travel details in writing.

Please note that Queensland Athletics does NOT book flights for athletes. Athletes are required to book their own flights. Athletes are not required to stay in Sydney for the entire championships; athletes may stay in Sydney for their event competition days only if they choose.

To support the safe and effective function of the Queensland team, the Association is calling for application for Team Staff. We are seeking to appoint up to 16 team staff members for this tour. Applicants are required to read through the information contained in this form. 

Applications close 5pm Monday 26th February, with successful applicants notified on Wednesday 28th February.
